A wireless measurement system was developed for measuring deformations in a large crankshaft during machining. The whole system is based on the ZigBee communication standard. It consists of up to 10 measuring nodes utilizing Mitutoyo micrometers. The measured values are transmitted via the ZigBee network to a data collector. The data collector is an ARM7TDMI based microcontroller unit programmed using the C language. The collected data are easily accessible by the superior control system as the data collector supports the Modbus over TCP/IP protocol. The whole system has a little power consumption allowing a long-term battery-powered operation.
