This paper describes a novel identification technique based on only a few characteristic numbers which can be used for a rough characterization of a process. The characteristic numbers do not determine one particular nominal model but together with suitable a priori information it forms a model set, which can be used for computing predictions in model predictive control or for robust PID controller design. Unlike other techniques for characteristic numbers identification this method does not require the controlled system to be in steady state at the beginning of the identification process. Thus it can be applied to arbitrary input-output data and it is also wellsuited for on-line identification, which predestines this method for use in model predictive and adaptive control.
