Evaluation of rotor contact detection system in steam turbines operation

Detection of the rotor contact in rotary machines, especially in steam turbines is a very important piece of information in modern facilities, where there are downsized clearances between the rotor and the stator due to increased efficiency. Contact itself leads to a bending of the rotor and thereby increases rotor vibration. The rotor/stator contact detection system was installed in Tušimice power plant to verify its diagnostic functions and monitoring the characteristic values of the turbine operation before the routine operation of the system. The system is a unique device that allows early contact detection on-line (it has not been possible to diagnose contact in turbines so far). Pilot rotor contact detection tested in Tušimice power plant successfully detects contact at an early stage of formation and significantly helped to identify the causes of rotor bending in four pieces of 210 MW turbogenerators.
